Went to Whites in Lawrence Hill to refresh my gas bottle on the weekend. They said that they will be going over to a larger bottle, about 3 times the capacity of the normal ones at a cost of £46 instead of £22. It will offer some cost savings in the long term, but they are going to be a lot heavier ...

Re: Growing hops at home

I have heard it suggested that only about 3 (of the strongest) bines pre rhizome should be retained so that the plant's energy goes into maximising cones rather than multiple bines. hops like plenty of fertiliser and water and light.

Re: Advice for New Brewer

if you want to design your own recipe i recommend brewing software like beersmith \ brewers friend which will help you dial in your gravity \ ABV \ bitterness etc. If you want to progress taste wise, I suggest you go to all grain via BIAB. There's a simple guide here.

Re: December meeting

I believe it is customary to bring the bar staff a bottle for their forbearance at this time of year, so if you are coming please bring a spare bottle.

Re: Winter warmer competition

The type of beer you would like to sup by a log fire in a homely pub after a long winter's walk. Suggest it would be dark, fairly strong but quite drinkable. e.g. old ale, porter, stout, possibly a barley wine.
